Highlights of this cruise:

Cape Town
160 years after its discovery by Portugal's Bartholomew Diaz in 1488, the Cape of Good Hope was still a part of primeval Africa. Sailors on passing ships impatient to reach the East or return home to Europe would leave messages under inscribed "post office" stones for other ships to carry forward. In 1580, Sir Francis Drake sailed around the Cape. The ruggedness and breathtaking beauty of the peninsula caused him to write, "This Cape is a most stately thing, and the fairest Cape in the whole circumference of the earth." The Dutch East India Company, yielding to repeated petitions and recommendations from their ships' officers, decided to establish a post at Table Bay in 1652. A stronghold was established and subsequently was replaced by the existing Castle of Good Hope - Cape Town's first building.

Cape Town continued to grow quickly under Simon van der Stel, who arrived as Governor in 1679. He turned vast regions into rich farmland, planted some 8,000 trees and designed and built the stateliest of the Cape's historic mansions, Groot Constantia (named after his wife, Constance). The British seized the Cape from Holland in 1806 and the subsequent discovery of diamonds and gold in the country spurred growth and immigration. Cape Town became a municipality in 1840 and a liberal constitution was granted to the Cape Colony in 1853. Today, the "Mother City" and the Western Cape are home to South Africa's parliament for half of the year (Parliament sits in Pretoria for the other half of the year) and much of its major industry.

Walvis Bay
Walvis Bay possesses the finest harbor on the Namib coast. That fact led to its annexation by the British in 1878, who added it to their enclave in South Africa. It was not until 1994 that the now-Republic of South Africa returned Walvis Bay to Namibia. The port is your gateway to the vast Namib Desert, one of the oldest and harshest deserts on Earth, and to the old German town of Swakopmund, a legacy of that distant era when Namibia was a German colony named Sudwest Afrika.

Walvis Bay perches on the edge of the great Namib Desert a landscape of extraordinary beauty with its immense dunes, moonscapes and salt sinks.

Lome
The nation of Togo has long been a favorite destination for experienced travelers. This narrow strip of country features a full range of landscapes and cultures - it is a microcosm of West Africa. While Togo boasts over 40 different ethnic groups with their own traditions and rituals, it is of interest to note that the region is the home of voodoo, which migrated to Haiti as a result of the slave trade.

The narrow nation of Togo extends from the sea toward the heart of Africa. In 1884, King Mlapa III signed a treaty that gave total control of the country to Imperial Germany.

Dakar
Senegal is a land of great silence - immense open plains, dotted with baobab trees, extend to the horizon. The silence is broken only by the seasonal winds of the Harmattan. Though Senegal's recorded history begins only in the 8th century, Neolithic stone circles demonstrate that the coastal region has been inhabited for untold millennia. Its history has been turbulent, contact with the West destroyed the coastal kingdoms of West Africa as English, French and Dutch adventurers vied for control of the slave trade in the 16th century. Control of Senegal passed to the French, who made Dakar the center of their West African colonial empire. Today, Senegal has a population of 11 million. A city of approximately three-million people, Dakar is one of the major trading centers of West Africa.

Ile de Goree, lying just off Dakar, was the site of one of the first French settlements in Africa and a slaving center from the early 19th century. The administrative capital of France's West African colonial empire, Dakar was a trading site for gold, ivory, leather and gum arabic.

Santa Cruz
Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary Archipelago. Like its brethren, Tenerife was formed by fierce volcanic activity. Its landscape remains dotted with volcanic cones and areas of intense geothermal activity. Towering over the island is Mt Teide, an extinct volcano that, at 12,200 feet above sea level, is the highest peak in Spanish territory. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island's capital and your port of call.

Tenerife's north shore is separated from the south by rugged mountains, creating a rain shadow. The majority of the islands most recent resorts are found in the sere and parched south shore.

Brussels
The best way to experience Antwerp's cosmopolitan charisma is on a walk through the city's old quarters.

Antwerp has an artistic legacy that spans five centuries. The painters Rubens, Van Dyck, and Bruegel all called the city home, and today Antwerp is rich in Flemish masterworks. But Antwerp's rise to international prominence in commerce began in 1863 with the opening of the Scheldt River to steam-powered transatlantic shipping. Today, Antwerp is not only Europe's second largest port but also the fifth largest port in the world. Still, what strikes travelers most is the city's grace and style. Antwerp is the home of Floris architecture, a style that combined elements from the late Gothic with innovations from the Italian Renaissance. Floris architecture spread quickly through Northern Europe, but the style's premier example remains Antwerp's elegant 16th-century Town Hall.

Dover
Visible for miles from sea, the White Cliffs of Dover are an instantly recognizable symbol of England. Modern highways make Dover the doorstep to London - Britain's ever-fascinating capital. Visitors to this great city have a wealth of pleasures to choose from. Explore the notorious Tower of London and view the Crown Jewels. Visit Windsor Castle or see Westminster Abbey. The choices are fascinating and endless. Dover is also your gateway to Kent's green countryside, dotted with old medieval towns and castles.

Dover has played a major role in world history since the days of the Norman invasion. Today 13th century Dover Castle dominates a harbor filled with cross-channel ferries and merchant and passenger shipping.
