Highlights of this cruise:
Mumbai
The home of Bollywood, the seat of the Hindi film industry, Bombay is the glamour capital of India. Bask in the glory of the Gateway of India, the signature mark of the city. Then, make a wish at the Tomb of Haji Ali and identify antique pieces at the Chor Bazaar to take home a bit of the spectacle.
Fujairah
The UAE is a federation of seven separate emirates, each with its own sheikh, and an incredibly diverse population, only 20% of whom are true Emiratis. Fujairah's mountainous landscape is a strong contrast to the other emirates, which are primarily blanketed by desert. But distances are short, and rolling golden sand dunes are close enough for an exhilarating off-road journey. If cliffs and canyons are more your style, travel by 4WD to the Hajar range, along steep and rugged winding tracks, past deep gorges and along terraced hillsides. Another option? The beaches on Fujairah's Gulf of Oman coast are among the UAE's best.
Aqaba
The warm, tranquil waters of the Red Sea are perfect for the growth of corals, and the masses of brilliantly colored fish that live amongst them, making Aqaba a prime attraction for snorkelers and divers. Inland is a vast desert of stark beauty that entranced Lawrence of Arabia when he headquartered in its empty canyons during WWI. Even more awe-inspiring is the ancient city of Petra, carved into dusky pink rock by the Nabateans more than 2000 years ago. Entering through a long narrow stone passage, you'll come suddenly upon the massive façade of the Treasury and stop dead in your tracks, mouth agape. "Wow" doesn't begin to cover it.
Safaga
Safaga is a gateway to the fabulous ancient temples of Luxor, with their massive columns and statues, and intriguing hieroglyphics, as well as the Pharonic tombs in the Valleys of Kings and Queens. It is the ancient Thebes, the glorious city of the god Amun-Ra, whose Great Temple at Karnak was begun by Ramses II in the 14th century BC. In the arid and empty landscape on the west bank of the Nile, lies the necropolis of Egypt's ancient rulers, its many tombs cut into natural limestone deposits. Inside them paintings and carvings on ceilings and walls contain symbolic and ritual meanings, and an air of mystery.
Paphos
With a history dating back more than 8000 years, Paphos is littered with the remains of every era since the Stone Age, including 4th century underground tombs, the exquisite mosaic floors of four Roman villas, a medieval fort, beautiful old port, Byzantine castle, and the Temple of Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love and beauty, according to myth, born here. Saul of Tarsus came, and converted the Roman proconsul to Christianity. For a break from your explorations, scout out the taverns and open-air cafes that line the charming fishing harbor, and catch up with the catch-of-the-day.
Athens
Occupied since 3000 BC, Athens has a rich history intended to be unearthed by all who visit. Hadrian's Arch, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and the Theater of Dionyssos, famed as the finest concert hall in Greece, must be explored. Another "must do" is to tour the interior of the Acropolis and museum.
