Gythion, Greece
Gythion is a small seaside town 40km south of Sparta, in the north east part of Mani, south of the Peloponnesse, Greece. Gytheio used to be an important port for many centuries until it was destroyed by an earthquake. Today it is the largest and most important town in Mani. It is also the capital of the municipality of Gytheio.
Tourists from all over the world come to enjoy the beaches and the laid back atmosphere. The main attractions are the beachside cafes, the numerous fishing boats in the harbour, an ancient theatre (where ancient Greek plays take place during the summer), and the tall houses along the beachfront.
Just outside the harbor is one of the most scenic parts of the area, the island of Kranae (Marathonisi). Legend has it that when Paris of Troy stole Helen from Sparta.
