Celebrate the fairytale beauty and romantic spirit of the Rhine
Artists, musicians, writers, and poets from all over Europe have immortalized the Rhine's unadulterated natural beauty in their songs, art, stories, and poetry. Byron, Dumas, Hugo, and Heine celebrated it in their writing. Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Schubert, and Wagner idolized it in their music, and Turner captured it in his paintings. And even today, the Rhine continues to inspire those who visit—especially Germany's Upper Middle Rhine Valley, spanning approximately 40 miles between Rüdesheim and Koblenz. This area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site with more than 40 castles gracing its shores, along with vineyard terraced landscapes and breathtaking countryside.
Therefore, it's only fitting to sail this inspirational region onboard Uniworld's stunning ship, S.S. Antoinette. Travel in ultimate style and comfort to UNESCO World Heritage sites. Take a breathtaking tour along the Alsatian Wine Road. Indulge in the region's famous Rheingau Rieslings at Castle Vollrads, and view fairytale Strasbourg as it has been seen for centuries, via a canal cruise. All this and more awaits you on "Castles along the Rhine."
Who will enjoy this cruise: Romantics, history buffs, wine connoisseurs, and nature lovers will rejoice in Medieval wine towns, glorious castles, majestic cathedrals, and world-class cities.
Highlights of this cruise:
Amsterdam
Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands is built around a concentric network of canals spanned by over 1000 bridges making canal cruises one of the most attractive ways of viewing the city. Many of the houses date back to the 17th century. These narrow-fronted merchants' houses are characterised by the traditionally Dutch ornamented gables.
The oldest part of the city is Nieuwmarkt, located near the first canals - Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht - built to protect the city against invasion in the 17th century. Today, Amsterdam's famous liberalism has survived in the city's 'coffee shops and thriving sex industry.
The city has also long been a centre of diamond cutting and it is still possible to see diamond cutters at work. Amsterdam has a booming cultural life, boasting 53 museums, 61 art galleries, 12 concert halls and 20 theatre. A special canal boat (the 'museum boat') links 16 of the major museums. In the local countryside it is still possible to see working windmills. There are annual events such as the Amsterdam Art Weeks and the Holland Festival.
Koblenz
Germany's cultural offerings are second to none. Its opera, symphonies, galleries, museums, architecture, nightlife and historic sites are as rich as any in Europe. Outdoors, the north coast beaches are popular summer resorts. In summer the scenic mountains and Black Forest draw hikers, climbers and campers; in winter, skiers.
Speyer
Located on the left bank of the Rhine, the old imperial city of Speyer became a bishopric in the 7th century. From 1294 to 1797 it was a free imperial city and the venue of numerous imperial diets. Visit the Romanesque cathedral with its six imposing towers. It is one of the finest examples of this architectural style. The tombs of eight emperors and kings and three empresses are located in the west crypt. In front of the cathedral stands a stone vessel dating from 1490 which was filled with wine to be given to the people when a new bishop was elected. Worth seeing is also the Jewish Spa, a subterranean spa which belongs to the largest and most monumental of its kind in Germany.
Basel
An industrial city straddling the Rhine, BASEL (Bâle) is often bypassed by travellers, which is a pity, since its historic medieval centre is definitely worth seeing. The University of Basel was a famed centre of learning in the late Middle Ages, and the presence here of Renaissance humanist and man of letters Erasmus was a great inspiration to the Reformation throughout the rest of Switzerland. Basel remains an enlightened place: the city authorities' reputation for arts sponsorship dates back to their first forays into the art market in the mid-seventeenth century, and the city's museums have the best collections of art treasures in the country.
