Surabaya, Indonesia
Surabaya is Indonesia's second-largest city and the capital of the province of East Java. It is located on the northern shore of eastern Java at the mouth of the Mas River and along the edge of the Madura Strait. It is a sprawling city which is modern in appearance, but also offers traces of its past. It is also a gateway for Mount Bromo and Bali.
Attractions in Surabaya include the historical attractions in the 'Old City' aea. These include the Ampel Mosque and the Kong Co Kong Tik Cun Ong Temple. There are a number of good museums including the 'House of Sampoerna' which showcases the history of the famed 'Kretek' cigarettes. The Monumen Kapal Selam (Submarine Monument) is also an interesting attraction.
Surabaya Zoo (Kebun Binatang) is a popular family attraction, as is the appealing stretch of sand better known to holidaymakers as Kenjeran Beach. The water slides at Ciputra Waterpark is fun for children and for adults, a stroll along the mouthwatering Food Street (G-Walk) is a must.

Travel Links - Surabaya's Juanda Airport (SUB) is the second busiest in the country after Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta, with very frequent flights to Jakarta and other major Indonesian destinations, as well as some direct international flights to destinations including Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Taipei, Guangzhou and Bandar Seri Begawan.
Surabaya has frequent bus connections from all parts of East Java and from major cities in other parts of Java and beyond. The main bus terminal is at Bungurasih, about 10 km south of the city.
Surabaya has two main stations, Surabaya Pasar Turi and Surabaya Gubeng. Trains using the northern main line from Gambir Station in Jakarta take at least ten hours to arrive at Pasar Turi, while trains using the southern main line take no less than 15. Trains from Bandung and Yogyakarta use the Gubeng station. The Argo Wilis travels at daytime, allowing passengers to enjoy the scenery in the western part of the route. The Sancaka travels to Yogyakarta via Solo.
