Aghios Nikolaos, Greece

Agios Nikolaos is a coastal town on the Greek island of Crete. It is east of the island's capital Heraklion, sitting partially upon the ruins of the ancient city of Lato pros Kamara. Agios Nikolaos is probably best known as a tourist town that serves as a hub to the twenty or so small villages and farms that make up that part of eastern Crete.

The port of Agios Nikolaos, has its own charm, as it is surrounded by the picturesque tile-roofed houses and is illuminated in the evenings by the lights of the shops and those of the kaikis and the boats moored at the big dock.

A popular tourist attraction is the small lagoon Lake Voulismeni, which features a small park with a walking trail, traditional fishing boats, ducks, pigeons, an amphitheatre and many cafès . The lagoon is linked to the sea by a narrow canal, adding to the overall beauty of the area. Other attractions in Agios Nikolaos include the small beaches in the town, the tiny island Agioi Pantes, the archaeological museum, the local flora exhibition "Iris" and numerous fairs.

Transport Links - Agios Nikolaos is accessible from the mainland and the whole of Europe through Nikos Kazantzakis airport and many daily ferry services in Heraklion. Two ships connect Aghios Nikolaos daily with the ports of Piraeus (Athens) and Dodekanisa. The Iraklion Airport on Agios Nikolaos is located approximately 60 km's from the town.
