Highlights of this cruise:
Dublin
DUBLIN is today a thriving, cosmopolitan city. Among the places we will visit on our selection of optional tours will be Dublin Castle and Trinity College, home to the famous 'Book of Kells'. For those with an interest in gardens there are two marvellous choices. Powerscourt Estate and Garden is situated in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. The blend of sweeping terraces, formal gardens, statuary and ornamental lakes together with secret hollows, rambling walks, walled gardens and over 200 varieties of trees and shrubs make this one of the world's great gardens. In the Dillon Garden, Helen Dillon has created one of the best designed and planted gardens in Ireland, situated within a walled rectangular garden, typical of Dublin's Georgian townhouses.
Cobh
Pronounced 'Cove', the COBH of Cork was known as Queenstown for many years, before reverting to its old Irish name in 1922. The town was the last port of call for the Titanic on her fateful maiden voyage in 1912. There is also a memorial on the quayside to the Lusitania , sunk off Kinsale in 1915. Nearby attractions include the charming city of Cork itself and 15th century Blarney Castle where you can kiss the famous stone and acquire 'the gift of the gab'. Another option is a visit to Muckross House and Gardens, a wonderful spot from which to take in the wild grandeur of the lakes and mountains of Killarney. Alternatively, take a short boat trip from Glengarrif across the sheltered inlets of Bantry Bay to Garinish Island and a visit to famous Ilnacullin Garden.
St Peter Port
Enjoy an island drive around this unspoiled corner of the Channel Isles. From the town of St. PETER PORT, our coach takes us through flower-lined lanes, past country cottages and rich pastures to Guernsey's fine sandy beaches and rocky coastline. It is thanks to strikingly successful conservation efforts that you can admire the estimated 1,400 species of wild plants which flourish in Guernsey's mild climate, including Mediterranean varieties at their northernmost limits. A visit will be made to the private Chilcott Garden and in contrast a commercial freesia-growing centre.
