Highlights of this cruise:
St Peter Port
Enjoy an island drive around this unspoiled corner of the Channel Isles. From the town of St. PETER PORT, our coach takes us through flower-lined lanes, past country cottages and rich pastures to Guernsey's fine sandy beaches and rocky coastline. It is thanks to strikingly successful conservation efforts that you can admire the estimated 1,400 species of wild plants which flourish in Guernsey's mild climate, including Mediterranean varieties at their northernmost limits. A visit will be made to the private Chilcott Garden and in contrast a commercial freesia-growing centre.
Dublin
DUBLIN is today a thriving, cosmopolitan city. Among the places we will visit on our selection of optional tours will be Dublin Castle and Trinity College, home to the famous 'Book of Kells'. For those with an interest in gardens there are two marvellous choices. Powerscourt Estate and Garden is situated in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. The blend of sweeping terraces, formal gardens, statuary and ornamental lakes together with secret hollows, rambling walks, walled gardens and over 200 varieties of trees and shrubs make this one of the world's great gardens. In the Dillon Garden, Helen Dillon has created one of the best designed and planted gardens in Ireland, situated within a walled rectangular garden, typical of Dublin's Georgian townhouses.
Kirkwall
The position of KIRKWALL in the heart of the Orkney Islands, between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, helped it become a crossroads for trade. Explore the island's Viking past, marvel at the remarkable Stone Age village of Skara Brae, visit historic Scapa Flow or perhaps sample a 'wee dram' of the local malt. There is also a chance to visit Balfour Castle on the nearby island of Shapinsay.
Invergordon
Situated on Scotland's rugged east coast, Invergordon offers numerous attractions nearby including Loch Ness, always popular with first time visitors, home of 'Nessie'' the monster, and historic and romantic castles such as Cawdor, Dunrobin and Brodie. The Highlands are steeped in history and heritage. Less than an hour's drive from Invergordon lies Culloden battlefield where Bonnie Prince Charlie's troops suffered a cruel defeat and the Jacobite Rising of 1745 came to an end. Nearby is Fort George, one of the outstanding artillery fortifications in Europe, built after the Battle of Culloden to discourage further Jacobite ambitions.
