Star Rating River
DouroAzul was established in 1994 by Mr. Mario Ferreira, a pioneer in river cruising on Northern Portugal's Douro River. Starting with just one daily tour boat, this family owned company's fleet has grown to include 11 river cruise and tour boats, making it the largest operator in Portugal. The company is still owned by its founding family and retains its family values, dedication to high quality and friendly guest service with authentic Portuguese charm.
The Douro River runs east to west, from Portugal's Spanish boarder to its Atlantic Ocean mouth near the city of Porto. The river valley cuts through the hills and terraced vineyards of the world renown Port Wine region, the world's oldest officially demarcated wine producing region. Cruising on the Douro River carries guests past these terraced vineyards, by colonial and medieval villages, through 5 locks which follow the river's 130 meters descent, below hillside wine lodges that boast world-famous names, and into the walled
city of Porto, a UNESCO heritage site. DouroAzul's riverboats sail only during daylight hours offering guests maximum vistas and sunshine. And throughout the voyage are visits to various ports from which everyone can enjoy tours of the many local highlights and attractions. The result is an idyllic cruise where, in addition to participating in the ships various enjoyable activities, guests can
also enjoy time alone allowing them to relax and peacefully enjoy the awe inspiring valley.
